One year after the capture of Bunagana by the M23 rebels, the question of security in the DR Congo remains a thorny problem

Introduction :
The Secretary General of the Alliance for Change castigates the inaction of the Tshisekedi Administration regarding security in DR Congo, a year after the capture of Bunagana by the M23 rebels supported by Rwanda. This event opened a new era of conflict in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Since then, the humanitarian and security crisis has deteriorated, creating a climate of insecurity throughout the region.

Body of the article:
Since the capture of Bunagana, the power in place seems to be groping, lacking a clear vision and a concrete security policy. The return of peace to the eastern part of the country requires a profound and urgent reform of the army, avoiding too often recourse to foreign armies, as highlighted by Belly Mutono, the secretary general of Jean-Marc’s party. Kabund.

Despite the efforts of the Congolese government to contain the violence, the situation remains worrying and continues to deteriorate the living conditions of the populations of the region. Armed groups, such as the M23 rebels, continue to exert a harmful and bloodthirsty grip on the local population. Human Rights Watch recently documented abuses by these groups, including rape and war crimes.

Nevertheless, positive initiatives have emerged to try to improve the situation in the region. Civil society organizations, such as REPALEF (Network for Peace, Empowerment and Liberation of Women) and SOS Women Victims of Sexual Violence, work tirelessly to provide assistance to women and children who are victims of violence.

In addition, political and citizen voices are rising to demand a profound reform of the army and a more serious consideration of security issues. This is how the REPOP political movement was recently launched, with the ambition of seizing power and redefining the politics of the DR Congo.

Conclusion :
The security situation in the DR Congo remains worrying, but positive actions have been taken to try to improve things. However, it is clear that the only lasting solution requires an in-depth reform of the Congolese army and a serious consideration of security issues by the government.
