“Deadly attack, political tensions and positive events: an overview of the current situation in the DRC”

The attack on the Lala IDP camp in the DRC’s Ituri province was condemned by the US Embassy in the DRC. On the night of June 11 to 12, more than 40 people were killed and several others injured by armed men assimilated to CODECO militiamen. In a tweet, the US Embassy in the DRC expressed its strong condemnation of the attack and reiterated its call for all armed groups to lay down their arms and join the ongoing dialogue processes in Congo-Kinshasa.

Meanwhile, political tensions in the DRC continue to escalate, with protests, arrests of journalists and restrictions on press freedom. A journalist was arrested for covering a protest, raising questions about press freedom in the country.

However, some news is positive, such as the growing political participation of women in the DRC. There was a day of exchanges in Kinshasa to discuss the obstacles and the solutions envisaged for the political participation of women.

In addition, two Congolese students won the national final of the international OHADA competition, while Barrick Gold, a mining company, is facilitating the return of white rhinos to the DRC as part of its biodiversity conservation efforts.

Finally, various political groups are forming in preparation for the next legislative elections in the DRC, in particular the “Réveil Populaire” group, which aims to win the elections.

Overall, the situation in the DRC remains complex, with security, political and press freedom challenges, but positive developments are also observed
