“Round table on the state of siege in eastern DRC: towards a crucial decision for peace and security”

The Defense and Security Commission of the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo recently participated in a round table organized by the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, in order to assess the state of siege underway in the provinces of the East of the country. The members of the commission expressed their reservations about the various options discussed during the roundtable, stressing that the final objective must be to restore state authority, security and peace in the region.

National deputy Bertin Mubonzi, chairman of the defense and security commission, stressed the importance of focusing on peace and security, which are the main concerns of the population in the east of the country. He called on the participants in the round table to orient their reflections around these two essential pillars for the well-being of the population.

For his part, the national deputy Jacques Djoli, vice-president of the Defense and Security Committee, underlined that all the options discussed (maintenance, requalification or lifting of the state of siege) have their advantages and disadvantages, but what matters above all, it is to achieve the objective of restoring peace and the integrity of the national territory.

The round table, which brought together members of the government, parliamentarians, representatives of civil society and other key players, aims to inform and guide the decision of the President of the Republic concerning the future of the state of siege in the eastern provinces.

This debate comes after several years of suffering of the population of the East of the country, which was confronted with the horrors of the war. The assessment of the state of siege aims to determine if significant progress has been made in terms of security and peace in the region, and if adjustments are necessary to better meet the needs of the population.

The Defense and Security Commission of the National Assembly is therefore in favor of a pragmatic approach, focused on results and aimed at restoring peace and security in the eastern provinces. It calls for the unity and responsibility of all participants in order to guarantee that the final decision taken by the President of the Republic is in line with this primary objective.

This round table marks an important step in the search for lasting solutions to end conflicts and establish a climate of peace and stability in this tormented region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The resulting decision will have a profound impact on the lives of millions of people and will mark a decisive step in consolidating state authority and building a better future for all
