Jean-Marc Kabund, national deputy, former 1st vice-president of the National Assembly and former interim president of the UDPS, is currently on trial before the Court of Cassation. The requisitions of the public prosecutor as well as the pleadings of the lawyers of the civil parties and the defense took place yesterday. The public prosecutor’s office has requested a 3-year prison sentence for Mr. Kabund, who is being prosecuted on 12 counts, in particular for insulting the Head of State, insulting the government and Parliament, and spreading false rumors aimed at alarming the population.
The verdict of this case will be delivered on September 6, 2023 during a mobile hearing scheduled at the Makala Central Prison. Since August 2022, Jean-Marc Kabund has been in preventive detention in this same prison, following his arrest by the General Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Cassation.
The offenses with which Mr. Kabund is charged stem from a press conference he hosted in July 2022, during which he announced the creation of his political party, the Alliance for Change. In his speech, he made outrageous remarks towards the President and the Institutions of the Republic, denouncing in particular the deterioration of the State apparatus, the desacralization of Parliament and the mismanagement at the top of the State.
