Trial of Jean-Marc Kabund at the Court of Cassation: The public prosecutor requests a sentence of three years of penal servitude

In the case between national deputy Jean-Marc Kabund-A-Kabund and the judicial authorities, the public prosecutor recently requested a three-year sentence of penal servitude against the former first vice-president of the National Assembly. This request was presented during the hearing held at Makala central prison.

Among the 12 charges initially brought against Jean-Marc Kabund, only three were retained by the prosecution of the Court of Cassation. These are the counts of contempt of corporate bodies, spreading false rumors and damaging imputations.

The Court of Cassation has taken the case under advisement and will deliver its judgment on September 6, thus marking a decisive step in this highly publicized trial.

During the hearing, the defense of Jean-Marc Kabund pleaded in favor of his acquittal. The former interim president of the UDPS was arrested on August 9 and is currently being held in Makala central prison.

It should be recalled that Jean-Marc Kabund is being prosecuted for having made remarks considered to be offensive during a press briefing, remarks which would have been likely to alarm the population and undermine the honor of public institutions as well as the dignity of the Head of State. In addition to these charges, he is also accused of insulting Parliament, the Government and the Republic, as well as spreading false rumors.

The trial of Jean-Marc Kabund began on August 7 at the Court of Cassation in Kinshasa. This case has attracted particular attention from the public, in particular because of the importance of Kabund’s political role in the National Assembly.

Pending the judgment of the Court of Cassation, the outcome of this trial remains uncertain. Supporters of Jean-Marc Kabund hope for recognition of his innocence, while the judicial authorities seek to demonstrate the seriousness of the charges against him.

All that remains is to wait until September 6 to find out the outcome of this affair, which is attracting the attention of many observers in the DRC. The consequences of this trial will undoubtedly be significant and could have considerable repercussions on the political scene of the country
