“Education crisis: Schools closed for a year in the Pont Ituri-Mambasa region due to the activism of armed groups”

The consequences of the activism of armed groups are being felt in a dramatic way in the region of Pont Ituri-Mambasa, where about twenty schools have been closed for about a year. This alarming situation was revealed by the NGO Resolute Associative Coalition for the Respect of Human Rights (COARDHO).

According to information provided by COARDHO, these schools had to cease their activities due to the insecurity caused by the presence of armed groups. This situation seriously compromises the return to school in this area and deprives many children of access to education.

The Mungamba region and its surroundings are particularly affected by these acts of violence. ADF rebels have been steadily carrying out deadly attacks and burning houses and vehicles for more than a year. Last week a taxi driver was killed and four vehicles were set on fire in an armed attack.

COARDHO also denounces cases of kidnappings, torture and looting perpetrated by negative forces and men in uniform. Residents of several villages are forced to flee their homes, leaving behind a land devastated by violence.

This situation is extremely worrying and requires urgent intervention. Education is a fundamental right for all children, and the fact that these schools have been closed for so long is depriving hundreds, if not thousands, of children of learning and developing.

The international community must take concrete measures to put an end to this situation. It is imperative to enhance security in the region and to ensure an environment conducive to learning for children. Education is the key to development and stability, and leaving no child behind is essential.

It is also essential to put in place assistance and support mechanisms for the victims of this violence. Displaced people and affected families need humanitarian assistance to rebuild their lives and regain some stability.

It is time to put pressure on local authorities and international actors to take concrete action to end this crisis. The education of children should not be sacrificed on the altar of insecurity. It is our duty to ensure a better future for every child, regardless of the context in which they grow up
