The CODECO militia struck again in the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing seven people in the village of Adrassi in the Djukoth chiefdom. This incursion also led to the destruction of four houses and the burning of houses. The assailants also attacked a FARDC position, but were repelled before killing the innocent civilians.
Innocent Wabekudu, president of the Territorial Coordination of the Civil Society Forces Vives of Mahagi, confirmed that the displaced have fled the insecurity created by CODECO and are seeking refuge in neighboring localities.
Despite the efforts made by the provincial government and its partners to bring peace to the region, CODECO has not ceased to mourn the territories of Mahagi and Djugu, despite the signing of peace agreements during a dialogue between local armed groups in Aru.
It is important to note that CODECO is not the only militia threatening security in eastern DRC, where the situation is often volatile. The region has also seen a resurgence in ADF activity since last year, as well as unrest linked to armed groups that have taken refuge in neighboring countries.
The humanitarian crisis in the region is also of concern, as increasing numbers of civilians have been displaced due to insecurity. Humanitarian organizations have appealed for help to meet the urgent needs of these vulnerable people.
In short, the situation has not yet found a lasting solution, while the lives of thousands of people are seriously threatened in this region.
