Jirama crisis in Madagascar: fuel transporters issue an ultimatum

In Madagascar, the national water and electricity company, Jirama, is once again faced with a critical situation. The fuel carriers have issued an ultimatum, demanding a solution to their claims by August 15.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Energy, the fuel carriers demand the payment of a colossal debt of nearly 14 billion ariary (about 3 million euros) from Jirama. This considerable sum is added to the numerous debts already accumulated by the company. If no satisfactory action is taken by the deadline, transporters are threatening to stop fuel deliveries to Jirama.

This situation jeopardizes the operation of the Jirama thermal power stations, which are essential for supplying electricity to the population, particularly during this period of the dry season when the rivers are in decline. Hydroelectric plants are already struggling to operate, leading to frequent power cuts, especially in the capital Antananarivo.

Fuel transporters also denounce the non-respect of Jirama’s commitments concerning the staggered payment of arrears. According to an agreement concluded in April with the minister, Jirama was to pay two billion ariary per month to the carriers, distributed equitably among them. However, the carriers claim that these payments have not been met, leaving them in a precarious financial situation.

This crisis highlights the financial difficulties faced by Jirama, which is struggling to ensure a regular supply of water and electricity to the population. This situation also highlights the need to find lasting solutions to guarantee the stability of the company and ensure quality service to all Malagasy people.

The Minister of Energy has not yet responded to requests regarding this situation, leaving uncertainty as to a possible resolution of this conflict. It is vital to find a solution quickly in order to avoid a paralysis of the energy sector in Madagascar and prevent the negative consequences on the daily life of the inhabitants
