“Deadly attack on the Congolese-Ugandan border: persistent security instability in the DRC”

Bloody attack on the Congolese-Ugandan border – A first attack with firearms and knives led by attackers from the Democratic and Allied Forces (ADF) took place in the border town of Kasindi. It was in the Congo Ya Sika neighborhood where they killed at least 8 people and took several others hostage. The governor’s delegate official assigned to this region, Sivavughirwa Barthélémy, confirmed the attack and said that investigations are already underway to establish the exact toll. This attack once again highlights the security instability that reigns in certain areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In other news, the announcement of the start of voter registration operations in Kwamouth territory by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) brings some positivity to the current political situation in the DRC. However, the recent Senate decision on electoral reform and the boycott of the bill by FCC senators cast doubts on the holding of the upcoming elections.

On the social side, the legal advances in the inclusion of women in the DRC are satisfactory, but challenges remain for a more equitable participation in elections. However, the hope for change is embodied by the candidacy of Hortense Kavuo Maliro for the presidency for an inclusive management of the DRC.

In terms of development, the investment of $25 million by Barrick Gold Corporation to save the white rhinos in Garamba National Park is good news for wildlife protection, while the observation mission of the vice- Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba Ngombo in Goma is expected to provide an overview of the humanitarian situation in North Kivu.

Finally, the OHADA international competition and the commitment of Congolese youth through the “Génies en herbe” event are signs of hope for the future of the DRC. However, tragic events such as the massacre of 41 displaced persons in the province of Ituri remind us of the urgency for the authorities to guarantee the safety of civilian populations.

In sum, the situation in the DRC is complex and requires constant attention and concerted action to move towards lasting political, economic and social stability.
