CODECO militiamen strike again in DR Congo: at least 40 dead in a bloody attack

Attacks by CODECO militiamen in DR Congo are causing great concern in the Djugu region (Ituri) where at least 40 people were killed overnight from Sunday to Monday June 12. According to information reported by Richard Dheda Kondo, head of the Bahema Badjere chieftaincy, children were savagely killed and other people burned to death in their shelters. The balance sheet could increase, several people are missing.

This is the second massacre of this type in the same city in six months, we recall. In January 2023, the militiamen attacked the Savo plain site 3 km from Bule-center, killing at least 10 people. Last May, three displaced people living on the Rhoe site were beheaded by the militiamen as they went to the field.

The national army has not yet commented on this latest attack. The situation is obviously worrying as several massacres of civilians have been perpetrated since the beginning of the year in the provinces of North Kivu, Ituri and the Eastern province. The United Nations has also called for an end to attacks on civilians in DR Congo
