Wave of violence in the DRC: unidentified militias reported in the province of Kongo-Central

The Democratic Republic of Congo is again under the influence of a wave of violence and insecurity. The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Interior and Security, Peter Kazadi, reported the presence of elements not yet identified in the province of Kongo-Central more precisely in the territory of Lukula. This announcement comes after the murder of a customary chief and the incursions of the “Mobondo” militia into the territories of Kenge and Popokabaka.

According to government spokesman Patrick Muyaya, this militia has again terrorized peaceful citizens and snatched many goods in the localities of Iniangi and Imbundi. However, a group of assailants was captured in other localities.

This situation risks aggravating the security crisis in western DRC, where ADF rebels continue to sow terror and paralyze education in the Rwenzori sector. In another register, the DRC has launched an agricultural program in partnership with DEM and Bio-Agro Business as well as a program to issue national identity cards.

In addition, the EU discussed with the DRC Ambassador to Benelux and to the EU on the security situation and the ongoing electoral process. On the other hand, the preparation of the Leopards of the DRC for CAN 2023 continues to face the Panthers of Gabon.

Finally, there is an escalation of political violence with the illegal occupation of the residence of Moise Katumbi by armed men, raising fears of an escalation of political violence in the country.

The DRC is therefore in a critical period where security is still threatened despite the efforts of the government and its partners to put an end to it.
