The fate of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, detained since the July 26 coup, continues to cause serious concern within the international community. The latter was sequestered in his residence with his family, and the conditions in which they are detained have deteriorated over time.
The European Union, through its spokesperson, has expressed its deep concern over the situation of President Bazoum. According to the information received, the president and his family have been deprived of food, electricity and health care for several days. This deterioration in their conditions of detention is deemed unacceptable by the European Union, which is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the president.
The African Union has also expressed its concerns about the situation of President Bazoum. The latter described the treatment inflicted on an elected head of state as “inadmissible”. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for the immediate release of President Bazoum and called on the international community to act to save his life.
The junta that took power in Niger has, for its part, repeatedly threatened to execute Mohamed Bazoum if ever the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) launches an armed intervention. This situation is all the more alarming since ECOWAS has decided to activate its military force to restore order in the country.
Security around President Bazoum’s residence has been tightened in recent days, with nearly 70 guards guarding the premises. Despite this, the president and his family are plunged into darkness, without electricity and a regular food supply. The president no longer has access to medical care, and the health of his son is also a concern.
Within the international community, many voices are being raised to denounce the taking hostage of President Bazoum and the fact that he serves as a human shield. Calls for his immediate release and respect for his rights are increasing.
It is essential that the international community continue to put pressure on the junta in Niger to ensure the safety and freedom of President Bazoum and his family. The current situation is intolerable and must be resolved as soon as possible in order to guarantee respect for human rights and democratic principles
