Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the Democratic Republic of Congo is at the center of the authorities’ concerns. A very technical meeting took place between the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention, Roger Samuel Kamba, and the representative of the World Bank in the DRC, Albert Zeufack. This meeting aimed to discuss the possibilities of providing quality care accessible to all Congolese.
Albert Zeufack stressed the need to work together to reduce infant and maternal mortality already triggered by certain free childbirth programs. These programs have already received funding from the World Bank through the Health System Development Project (PDSS). To guarantee the continuity of this free service, it is therefore planned to extend this project.
As the stakes are high, the World Bank plans to support the Congolese government by developing a costed UHC strategy. The two parties also discussed future opportunities for collaboration in other areas, including nutrition.
It is important to note that free care during childbirth is effective in 12 pilot provinces thanks to funding from the World Bank via the PDSS.
UHC is therefore a priority for the Congolese government. This project should allow each Congolese to benefit from access to quality care and thus contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.
