Road insecurity in the DRC: civil society calls for the deployment of soldiers on the Kwamouth-Masiambio axis

Article: Persistent insecurity on the Kwamouth-Masiambio road axis in the DRC

Persistent insecurity on the Kwamouth-Masiambio road axis in Kwamouth territory continues to concern local civil society. Since June 2022, Mobondo militiamen have been operating there with impunity, collecting fees from returned residents, installing traditional chiefs and imposing their own law on farmers.

This situation has prompted civil society in Kwamouth to call on the government to deploy the military on this axis to guarantee the safety of the inhabitants and establish the authority of the State. They thus hope to put an end to this insecurity, just as was the case on the river axis, where soldiers were placed in several villages going from Kwamouth to Kinshasa, thus allowing the resumption of traffic.

However, while peace is restored on the Congo River, the Mobondo militiamen continue their hunt on the main road, imposing their law on the villagers, collecting taxes and installing traditional chiefs. The deployment of the military on this axis therefore seems urgent to guarantee the safety of the inhabitants and to restore the authority of the State.

Finally, it should be noted that one hundred and nine (109) Mobondo militiamen were arrested in Kwamouth by the FARDC and transferred to Bandundu central prison last week.
