“Mzee Laurent Désiré Kabila Foundation victim of a new attack: the memory of the national hero desecrated”

The Mzee Laurent Désiré Kabila Foundation, created in 2001 in memory of the third president of the Democratic Republic of Congo and national hero, was the victim on June 1 of an attack by individuals suspected of being security agents and an unidentified military commando. The intruders broke into the foundation’s offices located on Boulevard du 30 Juin, in the Commune of Gombe, by forcing and violating the entrance doors of the building as well as all the doors of the various offices inside. The contents of several pieces of furniture were overturned and searched. This attack follows a first clandestine and illegal operation suffered by the Foundation in 2022. The President of the Foundation, Jaynet Kabila, at the time brought the facts to the attention of the authorities of the Republic, but no investigation was set up.

The Foundation issued a statement, strongly condemning these barbaric, criminal and despicable acts, which demonstrate the intentional violation of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jaynet Kabila recalls that these criminal acts profane the memory of his father, who devoted his life to the fight for democracy and sovereignty in the DRC.

There is a recurrence of attacks of this type in the DRC, as evidenced by the kidnappings and vandalism of the residence of Moïse Katumbi, the illegal occupation of several public buildings, as well as the kidnappings of dozens of people last April. This persistent situation in the country is worrying. Only a serious and non-partisan investigation can put an end to these attacks on the security and stability of the country.
