“Installation of the new youth parliament committee in Lubumbashi: the Pweto-Lubumbashi road still in disrepair, mining royalties diverted?”

The new committee of the Haut-Katanga youth parliament was installed on Saturday June 10, 2023 at the June 30 building in Lubumbashi. However, the Pweto-Lubumbashi road, essential for the economy and the social life of the population of the province, remains in an advanced state of disrepair. This forced the five parliamentarians from Pweto to go through Zambia to attend the ceremony.

These nuisances have prompted public opinion to denounce the corruption of the authorities who, according to them, embezzle mining royalties and other taxes. If the mining royalty is attributed to the chiefdom, it is however only used to maintain simple streetlights in the different groups of the M’pweto chiefdom.

Despite the presence of several elected ministers from Pweto, the provincial executive is almost non-existent in this territory. The actions of Governor Jacques Kyabula are invisible, while several observers accuse him of having transformed a football team into a political party.

In this new era where we are witnessing considerable changes, the young leaders of the Democratic Republic of Congo are called upon to become more involved in the development of the country. The national president of the youth parliament, Hussein Ndala, will be present at the installation ceremony of the new committee. Several guests, including the provincial youth minister and several young leaders from the DRC, will also be there.

In short, the current situation of the Pweto-Lubumbashi road raises questions about the transparency of the administration of mining royalties. Despite the presence of several elected ministers from the region, the executive is not active enough to change this situation. However, the advent of the new youth parliament committee of Haut-Katanga, under the leadership of Modeste BETU, is an encouraging sign for the future of the DRC.
