The exploratory mission of the European Union exchanged with the Deputy Prime Minister of the DRC in charge of defense to learn about the security conditions in anticipation of the deployment of its electoral observers in the country. The head of the EU exploratory mission, Vincent Ringenberg, underlined the importance of being reassured about the security guarantees provided by the DRC government to observe the elections in the country. The exploratory mission which is in the DRC for two weeks must review the security, political and logistical conditions before deploying its European observers next December. The members of the delegation asked mainly security questions and explained their objective of covering as many observers as possible, particularly in Goma where the security situation remains a source of concern. The European Union’s response to the Congolese government is expected next September.
In addition, the security situation remained worrying in the country. In the province of Kongo Central, the security crisis persists in 2023, leading to violence and kidnappings. The ADF rebels, based in the Rwenzori sector, continue to sow terror and paralyze the education sector. Armed men illegally occupied the residence of Moïse Katumbi, one of the main political opponents in the DRC. Fear of an escalation of political violence in the country persists.
In addition, the DRC has taken a crucial step towards the issuance of national identity cards, a project in partnership with Dem and Bio-Agro Business. The Congolese government has launched a new agricultural program to promote local food production. The Leopards of the DRC are preparing to face the Panthers of Gabon as part of CAN 2023.
In short, the political and security situation in the DRC is still unstable despite the efforts made by the government and its partners. The elections to be held in December raise concerns about security on the ground. However, the authorities are fighting to guarantee security for all the actors involved in this electoral process.
