ECOWAS deploys a “standby force” to restore constitutional order in Niger: A controversial solution to the political crisis

News: ECOWAS deploys a standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger

The coup that took place in Niger on July 26 against President Mohamed Bazoum sparked strong reactions within the international community. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has decided to take action by ordering the deployment of a “standby force” to restore constitutional order in the country. This decision has sparked divergent opinions among Nigeriens.

Eli Bossoma, an actor in Nigerien civil society, believes that ECOWAS is only “clearing its conscience” by taking firm measures. He deplores the impasse in which the country finds itself, with the junta refusing to sit down at the negotiating table and the arguments put forward not convincing anyone. According to him, it is crucial to respect democracy and the choices of the people of Niger.

Djibril Idrissa, secretary general of the Democratic Confederation of Workers of Niger (CDTN), advocates dialogue as a solution to the crisis. He is convinced that if the stakeholders agree to sit around the same table, they will be able to find common ground. He also stresses the importance of the release of Mohamed Bazoum for an effective resolution of the conflict.

On the other hand, a Nigerien, who preferred to remain anonymous, affirms that the constitutional return of Mohamed Bazoum is impossible and that ECOWAS should rather accompany Niger in its process of transition towards a transitional government. According to him, the activation of the standby force of ECOWAS is only an intimidation and will lead to nothing.

Faced with these different opinions, it is clear that the situation in Niger is complex and requires a nuanced approach. ECOWAS is trying to find the best solution to restore constitutional order in the country while guaranteeing stability and democracy. The deployment of the standby force will be a crucial test for the effectiveness of this international intervention. It remains to be seen how events will unfold and what the outcome of this crisis will be
