Women’s tennis in the Democratic Republic of Congo recorded an honorable result during the 5th day of the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers. The Ladies Tennis Leopards played a match in favor of Ethiopia. They lost with the score of 1-2. However, this defeat should not be considered a failure, as it was their first participation in this competition.
Compared to the two previous defeats, the Congolese sportswomen showed a better level of play. They won a victory thanks to Nancy Onia, who saved the honor by equalizing after Charlène Wantona’s setback. Unfortunately, in doubles, the girls could not resist against the Ethiopian duo and suffered a defeat which closes the match.
If we take into account the travel conditions of the team, which did not benefit from the public authorities, the results of this first participation are honourable. The federal committee, led by engineer Georges Koshi Gimeya, has done everything possible to ensure that the selection takes part in this competition. He can be proud of the results. The Ladies Tennis Leopards of the DRC managed to climb to 6th place (out of 11 countries) in the competition.
Sports news in the DRC is rich in events. Beyond women’s tennis, other disciplines are also booming. Congolese teams are facing tough opponents, but sportsmen and women remain motivated to defend the colors of their country. The DRC is a sporting country that deserves to be highlighted for its performance and its potential
