Title: Tshikapa: the LUCHA march for the reduction of REGIDESO prices prohibited by the town hall
The town hall of Tshikapa banned the peaceful march organized by the citizens’ movement Fight for Change (LUCHA), which demanded lower prices for Regideso. Scheduled for Friday, June 9, the purpose of this demonstration was to protest against the increase in connection rates to Regideso, from 220 to 320 USD.
Jean Pierre Ntumba, deputy mayor of the city of Tshikapa, justified his decision by explaining that the current political and social issues do not allow the holding of this march. He urged protesters to report to City Hall for further guidance. However, the LUCHA continued its march, despite the ban from the town hall.
Faced with a connection that has become too expensive for households, this ban has drawn the attention of the population of Tshikapa who are worried about the current economic situation. Although the street is not the only way to claim the rights of the population, LUCHA has chosen to demonstrate peacefully in order to make its voice heard.
This ban highlights the ongoing challenge to freedom of expression in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is therefore more important than ever to find lasting and sustainable solutions to deal with this situation.
