Round Table on the evaluation of the state of siege in the Provinces of Ituri and North Kivu: a step towards lasting peace in the DRC
The Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama, convened a Round Table on the evaluation of the state of siege in the Provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, on the instructions of the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi. This initiative aims to decide on the future of this measure put in place with the aim of restoring lasting peace in the eastern part of the country, which has suffered for more than two decades from insecurity caused by local and foreign armed groups.
The meeting, which will be held for three days at the People’s Palace in Kinshasa, will bring together various institutional and civil society actors. Delegates from various institutions, provincial assemblies, provincial governments, the judiciary, customary power, religious denominations, recognized organizations and associations, as well as experts will be present to participate in this consultative round table.
The Prime Minister invited the heads of the institutions and organizations concerned to forward the lists of delegates and send them to the People’s Palace in Kinshasa for their accreditation. The provincial governors, in particular the military governors of the provinces concerned, were also requested to make the necessary arrangements for the travel and participation of the designated provincial delegates.
This round table represents an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of the state of siege and to discuss the measures to be taken to strengthen security and stability in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu. It will also make it possible to collect the opinions and recommendations of the various actors involved in resolving the security crisis in the east of the country.
The situation in this region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains worrying, with kidnappings, human rights violations and persistent insecurity. It is essential to develop effective strategies to deal with these challenges and ensure the safety of local populations.
President Tshisekedi’s initiative to convene this Round Table demonstrates his commitment to finding lasting solutions to end insecurity in the east of the country. By bringing together the various actors concerned, it is hoped that concrete and achievable recommendations will be formulated to strengthen the state of siege and ensure the protection of civilians in these provinces.
