The provincial government of Kwango lifted, two days ago, the curfew introduced last May from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to deal with incursions by Mobondo militiamen who left several dead and injured in the province. This lifting of the curfew was justified by a lull observed in several parts of the province.
According to Adelar Nkisi, spokesperson for the Kwango provincial government, this measure was taken because of the difficulty of reacting to the Mobondo. The authorities had therefore decided to weaken them by eliminating night travel for the entire population. Since the lifting of the curfew, it seems that the situation has become calmer again. Large-scale security actions are not announced at the moment, but decisions are being taken to take charge of the situation.
Civil society organizations reported a death toll of at least 33 last May following militia incursions into Kwango province. To date, their presence is reported only in the territory of PopoKabaka where they bother the population and even recruit young people, according to local sources.
The situation is being carefully monitored by law enforcement and security forces to prevent any further escalation allowing these militiamen to sow chaos again
