“Courageous young parliamentarians cross Zambian territory for the installation of the new committee of the Haut-Katanga youth parliament”

The new committee of the Haut-Katanga youth parliament was installed in the June 30 building in Lubumbashi on Saturday, June 10, 2023. On this occasion, the youth parliament of Pweto was represented by five honorable parliamentarians. These include the territorial president of parliament, Sylvain Matipa; Vice President Lycaon Dowo; the secretary-rapporteur and, finally, the deputy quaestor of parliament.

These young parliamentarians had to cross Zambian territory to reach Lubumbashi, due to the advanced state of disrepair of National Road No. 5. However, despite the presence of two large mining companies in the territory of Pweto where mining royalties and other taxes are paid, the Pweto-Lubumbashi road remains in a critical state. According to many observers, the money ends up in the pockets of the local authorities and the mining royalty allocated to the chiefdom only benefits the maintenance of a few streetlights.

The absence of a real provincial executive in the territory of Pweto is also pointed out, as are the invisible actions of Governor Jacques Kyabula, accused of simply transforming a football team into a political party.

Several elected ministers from Pweto are nevertheless present in the provincial government, in particular the minister of communication and spokesperson for the government, the arts and health.

The new committee of the Haut-Katanga youth parliament is led by the Honorable President Modeste Betu and his team, in the presence of the provincial minister of youth and many young leaders of the DRC. However, the economic and social situation of the Province remains worrying, suggesting a reorientation of the policies put in place in order to better meet the needs of the population.
