“Attempted kidnapping of members of Ensemble pour la République de Moïse Katumbi in the DRC: Concern for the safety of political members of the opposition”

Deputy Gratien de Saint-Nicolas Iracan, General Delegate in charge of elected officials and High Representative of Moïse Katumbi for the Greater Oriental Region, recently denounced the case of two members of Ensemble pour la République de Moïse Katumbi, who made the subject of a kidnapping attempt. They are the honorable national deputies Nsafu Daniel and Mutombo Germain Mutombo.

MP Nsafu was chased by unknown gunmen, but managed to escape kidnapping. However, the individuals in question then went to Nsafu’s family residence in Matete and ransacked the property. Details of the attempted kidnapping of MP Mutombo are not yet clear, but he was also targeted by armed individuals.

The Deputy Gratien of Saint-Nicolas Iracan seized Christophe Mboso, President of the National Assembly, to request the involvement of the various services to ensure the safety of the members of his party in accordance with the legal provisions of the Constitution. This kidnapping attempt is a worrying signal for the safety of opposition members.

Insecurity in the DRC is a recurring subject. Despite the efforts made to put in place security measures, it is essential that more measures be taken to protect members of the opposition against these acts of violence. The political situation in the country remains tense, with economic and political challenges ahead.

In sum, the attempted kidnapping of national deputies Nsafu and Mutombo is a matter of concern that requires rapid action to ensure the safety of political members of the opposition. The DRC must continue to put in place effective measures to protect all citizens against violence and insecurity
