Bilateral cooperation between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United Kingdom continues to strengthen. During a recent meeting between the Congolese Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, and the Ambassador of the United Kingdom in the DRC, Mrs. Alyson King O. B. E., many subjects of common interest were discussed, with particular attention paid on the ongoing electoral process in the DRC.
During this fruitful meeting, it was confirmed that the United Kingdom was committed to supporting the DRC in its electoral process. The Prime Minister reassured the Ambassador about the financing and security of the elections, stressing the importance of protecting democracy in the DRC and guaranteeing the confidence of all Congolese citizens.
In addition to the electoral process, other topics were discussed, such as the conflicts in eastern DRC. Regional cooperation and efforts to support peace processes were discussed. Mrs. Alyson King O.B.E. also underlined the importance of democracy and the role of SADC in supporting democratic principles.
In addition, economic and trade relations between the DRC and the United Kingdom were discussed. The importance of accelerating investments for the protection of forests and the environment in the DRC was underlined. Upcoming events were mentioned illustrating the UK’s commitment to expanding bilateral trade.
Finally, as a partner, the United Kingdom is committed to providing technical and financial assistance to the electoral process in the DRC, particularly with regard to election observation actions. This assistance aims to maintain the development of democracy in the DRC and to strengthen the confidence of Congolese citizens.
