Talks in Kenya: Towards a peaceful resolution to the political crisis

The talks in Kenya: towards a resolution of the political crisis

In Kenya, talks between power and the opposition began on Wednesday with the aim of finding a solution to the political crisis that has shaken the country for several months. This crisis pits President William Ruto against his rival Raila Odinga and has led to a series of violent demonstrations, which have caused the death of many people.

The talks, which are taking place in Nairobi, aim to find common ground between the two parties, without leading to a sharing of power. Both President Ruto and opposition leader Odinga have been clear on this point: no negotiations will lead to another leader occupying the presidential post.

However, despite this agreement on power sharing, other points of disagreement remain. The delegations announced the creation of a committee in charge of harmonizing the agenda of the discussions, because the questions of purchasing power and the new taxes introduced by President Ruto are sources of divergence.

Odinga’s coalition demands that these issues be at the heart of the dialogue, while President Ruto opposes it. In addition, the opposition is calling for an “audit” of last year’s presidential election, which it still contests. For the power in place, this question has already been decided by the Supreme Court and cannot be questioned.

It therefore remains to be seen how these talks will evolve and whether they will succeed in resolving the political crisis which divides Kenya. In the meantime, the country hopes that these discussions will help end the violence and find solutions to move towards a more stable political future.

In any case, it is clear that these talks are an important step in the search for a peaceful resolution to the political crisis that is shaking Kenya. The path of dialogue is essential to find lasting solutions and move the country forward on the path to prosperity and stability
