Rise of the opposition’s tribalist discourse in the DRC: the UDPS is sounding the alarm to safeguard national unity.

DRC: The UDPS is concerned about the rise of opposition tribalist discourse

The Secretary General of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), Augustin Kabuya, condemned during a political morning in Kinshasa on June 7, 2023, the tribalist and hate speech multiplied by the Congolese opposition. According to him, such messages threaten the national unity advocated by the Head of State.

“The UDPS has made a lot of marches in this country, have you ever listened to Félix Tshisekedi say that the Katangans, you killed people? Never! What does this speech have to do today, these are things that must be denounced,” said Kabuya.

The SG of the presidential party also castigated civil society actors who do nothing to denounce this situation, which according to him, divides the Congolese people.

On the sidelines of this political morning, Augustin Kabuya stressed that his mission outside the country was part of raising awareness among the Congolese diaspora for the next elections.

This rise in tribalist rhetoric only rekindles tensions in a country that had nevertheless managed to achieve a peaceful transfer of power in 2019 after controversial elections. It is therefore important to advocate national unity and to avoid any remarks that could create ethnic divisions.
