“Vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis in the DRC: Let’s protect our children and eradicate this disease”

Vaccination against poliomyelitis: an important step for the health of children

In a context where infectious diseases continue to threaten the health of children, the vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis in the DRC takes on a new dimension. The National Minister of Health, Dr. Roger Kamba Mulamba, recently launched the second phase of this campaign in Kisangani, in the DRC province. This event aims to educate parents on the importance of vaccination and to ensure the protection of children against this disease.

Poliomyelitis is a viral disease that can lead to permanent paralysis, mainly in children under the age of five. It is spread by direct contact with nasal secretions or saliva of infected people. Fortunately, thanks to vaccination, poliomyelitis is being eradicated in many countries. However, efforts continue to be made to reach the most vulnerable communities and ensure adequate vaccination coverage.

The second phase of the vaccination campaign in the DRC, which runs from August 10 to 12, 2023, targets 11 provinces of the country, including Tshopo. The strategy put in place is door to door, in order to reach as many children as possible. This approach is crucial to ensure that all children 0-59 months receive the necessary vaccination to protect against poliomyelitis.

During the launch of the campaign in Kisangani, the Minister of Health, Dr Roger Kamba, stressed the importance of vaccination in protecting children from this potentially devastating disease. He called on parents to be aware of the seriousness of poliomyelitis and to open their doors to vaccination teams. “Don’t let your children become disabled by something that can be prevented,” he said. “Express your love for your children by allowing them to be vaccinated.”

The governor of the province of Tshopo, Madeleine Nikomba, has also pledged to support this campaign and ensure its success. She stressed the importance of protecting children against poliomyelitis and urged parents to have their children vaccinated.

This new vaccination campaign aims to reach nearly 10 million children in the DRC. This is an essential preventive measure to ensure the health and well-being of children. By working together, health authorities, health actors, partners and the local community can help eliminate polio and ensure a healthy future for future generations.

Vaccination is an effective way to prevent infectious diseases and protect children’s health. By participating in this polio vaccination campaign, parents play a crucial role in protecting their own children and the community as a whole.. Never underestimate the positive impact vaccination can have on public health.
