“The United Nations supports the pre-cantonment of M23 rebels in Rwanda to strengthen security in eastern DRC”

The M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, will be subject to pre-cantonment and cantonment operations. The United Nations is committed to supporting this initiative with political and logistical efforts. The pre-cantonment site was chosen at Rumangabo, in Rutshuru territory, before the elements were transferred to the cantonment site in the vicinity of Kindu, in Maniema.

The security situation in eastern DRC remains precarious. The regional EACRF force has recaptured some rebel strongholds since December, but the rebels remain on the ground alongside EAC forces. The Congolese authorities warn of a strengthening of the position of the M23 rebels supported by Rwanda, who are planning an offensive on the city of Goma, provincial capital of North Kivu.

Despite these difficulties, Monusco continues to play its role of protecting civilian populations and supporting regional initiatives for the return of peace in eastern DRC. UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, reaffirms the commitment of the United Nations to support the process of pre-cantonment and cantonment of M23 elements and to strengthen regional efforts in collaboration with the Congolese authorities.

Fighting armed groups, economic and social challenges, as well as political and security issues, remain priority issues for the DRC. Other current issues such as respecting the curfew in Butembo to deal with insecurity and the establishment of a vehicle technical control center to improve road safety are also at the center of attention.

Finally, there is a deep inequality between the sexes in the Congolese media, as highlighted by a study by UCOFEM. Celebrities are not spared either. An example of this is the conflict between singer Fally Ipupa and his daughter Keyna, which brought their private lives to light on social media.

Overall, the current situation in the DRC is complex and multifaceted, but efforts are still being made to address these challenges and tackle the issues that arise every day.
