The Great Lakes region of Africa continues to face enormous security and political challenges, specifically in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Sudan. In a speech delivered at an extraordinary meeting of the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, highlighted the disastrous consequences of these challenges for populations of the region.
Moussa Faki Mahamat commended the efforts of regional organizations such as the East African Community (EAC), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). ) in coordinating diplomatic and military initiatives to defuse tensions between the DRC and Rwanda.
However, he called on the United Nations and other partners to support these efforts by providing financial, technical and logistical assistance to the DRC. He also announced the holding of a quadripartite summit bringing together representatives of ECCAS, ICGLR, SADC and EAC to work towards better coordination of regional efforts.
Despite the progress recorded in the region, the security situation in the eastern part of the DRC continues to be of concern. The regional force EACRF has recovered some strongholds of the armed group M23, but the rebels are still present on the ground. Moussa Faki Mahamat called for stronger action to resolve these security challenges in the region.
