“Political repression and instrumentalization of justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo”
The political situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo raises deep concerns about the use of justice and security services to repress political opponents. The NGO JUSTICIA Asbl, based in Lubumbashi, recently expressed its deep concern at this alarming trend.
In a press release, the organization highlights a letter issued by the former Special Adviser on Security to the Head of State, Felix Tshisekedi. This letter addressed to the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation concerns the legal cases against Moise Katumbi, a figure of the Congolese opposition.
JUSTICIA Asbl underlines that the instrumentalization of the security and justice services to exclude potential candidates for the presidential election or to repress the opposition is worrying and undemocratic. The NGO also mentions other political opponents who face legal harassment, as well as acts of political intolerance, such as the attack on the procession of a national deputy.
The organization therefore calls on the Congolese government to avoid embarking on this perilous path which compromises the fragile peace of the post-conflict country. It is essential that the elections take place in a peaceful atmosphere, marked by tolerance and respect for the verdict of the ballot boxes.
JUSTICIA Asbl also reminds the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation of the regrets expressed by the Head of State concerning the poor functioning of justice. It is essential not to support a political approach that could further damage the credibility of this institution.
It is important that the political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and all the institutions of the Republic work together to guarantee free and fair elections. The Congolese population and international partners must remain vigilant to counter any attempt to seize or maintain power through devious means and in violation of the constitution.
In conclusion, it is crucial that the Democratic Republic of the Congo demonstrates a real commitment to democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights. Political repression and misuse of justice must be condemned and fought to ensure a democratic and prosperous future for the country
