The Democratic Republic of Congo was in the center of the news this week. US Foreign Secretary Anthony Blinken called Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi to express his concern over the violence in the east of the country. On his Twitter account, he said that all parties must respect the Luanda and Nairobi processes to end this violence.
Anthony Blinken also discussed with Félix Tshisekedi the democratic life of the DRC. The United States is mindful of the rights of the Congolese people to demonstrate peacefully to express their concerns and aspirations. The US Secretary of State also reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting free and fair elections in the DRC.
Regarding security, Anthony Blinken insisted that his country had called on Rwanda to end its military support for M23 terrorists.
This call took place while President Felix Tshisekedi was on a state visit to the People’s Republic of China to discuss bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The Congo is also at the center of several other subjects, in particular the appointment of Pascaline Zamuda as deputy director of the Fonhab to improve social housing, the crisis of the International Bank for Africa in Congo, or the electoral conflict which reveals political tensions still present.
These various news items show that the Congo is a country on the move, with progress but also problems to be solved. It is important to follow these events to understand the evolution of the political, economic and social situation in this African country in full transition.
