Strike of taxi drivers in Kinshasa: the State called to act to put an end to red tape.

News in the DRC: strike by taxi drivers in Kinshasa

On Monday, June 5, 2023, taxi and taxi-bus drivers went on strike despite the 10-day moratorium offered by provincial transport authorities. The reasons for this movement are multiple, ranging from rising prices to insecurity and red tape.

Faced with this recurring discontent, the lawyer Placide Luboya Mwanza asks the State to act in a global and globalizing way. Indeed, it is a question of putting an end to police and administrative harassment by identifying and eliminating rogue elements and non-apparent agents.

In addition to this, the State must also obtain a sufficient number of wheeled vehicles to meet the needs of the Kinshasa population, or even the Congolese.

The “payment” phenomenon, which consists of requiring police officers and officers to pay sums of money at the end of each day, is also the source of many hassles.

It is urgent for the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Interior and Transport to act in collaboration with all the security services to put an end to this situation. Local elected officials must also be involved and hold police and transport officials to account.

It is time to put an end to this total resignation from the State and to definitively settle this problem which affects Congolese citizens on a daily basis.
