“MONUSCO provides essential support to detainees in Beni: distribution of food and basic necessities”

In a gesture of solidarity and humanitarian aid, MONUSCO personnel in Beni provided support to detainees in three prisons in the city. Last Saturday, a delegation from the UN Mission in the DRC went to Beni prisons to distribute food and non-food items to detainees who are facing many difficulties.

This initiative aims to alleviate the suffering of detainees who lack almost everything in these penitentiary establishments. The delegation brought large quantities of food, including rice, cassava and maize flour, beans and vegetable oil. Hygiene kits for women were also distributed. The detained children were not forgotten, games were given to them for their entertainment.

The Mayor of Beni, Senior Principal Commissioner Jacob Nyofondo Te Kodale, expressed his gratitude to MONUSCO for its constant support towards the prisons. He underlined that MONUSCO is an indispensable partner, ready to intervene as soon as there are problems in the prisons. He welcomed this new initiative which contributes to relieve the prisoners.

Josias Obat, head of the MONUSCO/Beni office, who led the delegation, explained that MONUSCO’s mission is to fill the void left by the state by providing assistance to detainees who cannot work to support themselves. their needs. He underlined that MONUSCO is there to support the State and provide assistance to those incarcerated.

The MONUSCO delegation went successively to the Kangbayi prison for men, to that for women as well as to the childcare establishment. This solidarity action is a concrete example of MONUSCO’s commitment to the Congolese population and demonstrates the Mission’s desire to contribute to improving the living conditions of the most vulnerable people.

By providing food assistance and basic necessities, MONUSCO plays an essential role in protecting the fundamental rights of detainees. This action also illustrates the need for close cooperation between national authorities and international missions to meet humanitarian needs within prisons.
