Title: The historic visit of the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, to China: a turning point for the DRC
On Monday June 5, 2023, the sectoral ministers of the Democratic Republic of Congo and China signed a comprehensive strategic partnership as part of the state visit of the President of the Republic, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi to China. This win-win partnership between the two countries aims to relaunch their cooperation and broaden their range of partners.
According to the Minister of Communication and Media, Patrick Muyaya, “many things were done on the sidelines of this visit, in particular the signing of several memoranda between the sectoral ministers of the two countries, but also you heard a lot about what we called: the “global and strategic partnership”, and with this world power, we would like to relaunch our cooperation. »
The Deputy Prime Minister, Christophe Lutundula, underlined China’s interest in strategic minerals and the development of natural resources, which occupies a prominent place in this partnership. He also recalled that “the DRC is an open and unoffered country”, and that “we have traditional partners but we must broaden our scope”.
Several legal instruments of cooperation, mutual expectations and some agreements have been signed in the digital, environmental and media sectors. The Minister of Finance, Nicolas Kazadi, recalled that the objective of the mission was not to sign contracts but rather to relaunch bilateral cooperation between Kinshasa and Beijing.
Despite some disputes related to some investments already discussed before the visit, this event marks a turning point in Sino-Congolese relations. The global strategic partnership signed opens favorable doors for the DRC to attract Chinese investors and strengthen ties with one of the main economic players on a global scale.
In short, this historic visit by President Tshisekedi marks a turning point for the DRC and its economic development. This win-win partnership is an opportunity for the DRC to broaden its range of partners while enhancing its natural resources.
