“The Ituri region in the DRC again targeted by terrorist attacks – 8 civilians killed”

The Ituri region in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is again plagued by terrorist attacks carried out by suspected Ugandan rebels of the Democratic and Allied Forces (ADF). The Convention for the Respect of Human Rights (CRDH) declared that eight civilians were killed during terrorist attacks carried out in the localities of Mutuweyi, Malanga and Bekembela on 2 June.

The bodies of the victims were discovered two days later in the chiefdom of Walese-vonkutu, in the territory of Irumu. The CRDH reports that the combatants circulate freely in the fields of the inhabitants and commit crimes. The situation is all the more worrying as the strongholds of these rebels are settling in this region near the neighboring province of North Kivu.

Worse still, the Congolese authorities have not yet taken the ADF file with the seriousness it deserves. The CRDH has thus denounced the lightness with which these authorities deal with this issue. It therefore invites the population to avoid areas at risk and not to frequent their fields.

The security situation in the DRC continues to deteriorate despite the efforts of law enforcement. The inhabitants of the region live in constant fear of terrorist attacks and massive population displacements. To this day, there is still no clear way out to end this crisis
