“Municipal elections in the DRC: A historic turning point towards local democracy”

The municipal elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) scheduled for December 20, 2023 will mark a historic turning point in the country. Indeed, since 1987, voters had been deprived of their right to choose their municipal councillors, who were appointed by the mayors in place. This election will therefore make it possible to restore local democracy and will provide an opportunity for young people and women to become actively involved in political life.

During a recent consultation with young people and women, the President of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), Denis Kadima, stressed the importance of this election for learning about democratic life. He encouraged young people and women to seize this opportunity to become key actors and contribute to the improvement of democratic governance.

The participation of young people and women in political life is essential to ensure fair representation of society in decision-making. Too often marginalized, these groups have the opportunity to present themselves as candidates and put forward their ideas and concerns. This active participation can contribute to a renewal of the political scene and the emergence of new perspectives.

However, Denis Kadima also warned against the manipulations and violence to which young people can be exposed during the electoral campaign. He encouraged young people not to allow themselves to be exploited, but to become real players in the political game.

The CENI is committed to organizing credible, transparent, inclusive and peaceful elections. It will put in place measures to ensure that young people and women can participate fairly and safely in the electoral process.

By restoring elected municipal councillors, the DRC is taking an important step towards local democracy. This election offers a unique opportunity for young people and women to get involved in building a democratic future and asserting their voices and aspirations. It is therefore essential that these groups seize this opportunity and actively engage in the political life of their country.

The path to true democracy is often rocky, but with everyone’s commitment and participation, the DRC can move towards free and fair elections where every vote counts
