The governor of Ituri praised the work of MONUSCO blue helmets during a field visit last Sunday. Lieutenant-General Johny Luboya Nkashama underlined their crucial support for the FARDC in Ituri province, where they have set up bases to ensure the security of the population against threats from armed groups.
The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Security and Peace, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, also recognized the impact of the work of blue helmets in Ituri. He reminded MONUSCO forces of chapter seven to carry out their mission. The latter consists in particular in protecting civilian populations in danger.
Yet, despite their work, security in the DRC remains unstable. Recently, Ugandan rebels carried out a deadly attack on civilians. In addition, the elections have been disputed and MPs are accused of inciting tribal hatred, causing growing tension in the country.
However, the government has taken initiatives to improve the situation. The governor of Kasai, for example, has launched work to combat soil erosion. President Felix Tshisekedi also said that energy and infrastructure were priorities for public investment budgeting.
Despite these efforts, the opposition is calling for action by the international community to address the deteriorating economic and social situation in the DRC and the impending humanitarian crisis. The M23 rebels, supported by the Rwandan army, continue to sow insecurity in Rutshuru territory.
In conclusion, the situation in the DRC requires an urgent solution to protect civilian populations and restore peace and stability in the country.
