Quadripartite Summit on Peace and Security in Eastern DRC

A quadripartite summit on peace and security in eastern DRC is scheduled for June 23 in Luanda, at the instigation of the CIRGL, SADC, EAC and ECCAS, and placed under the aegis of the Union to improve the coordination of peace efforts and initiatives in the Great Lakes region.

Leaders from the region met over the weekend and affirmed the urgent need to strengthen coordination as well as operationalize the framework for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the ceasefire and withdrawal of the M23 of the occupied territories.

The summit urged all armed groups to respect the ceasefire and withdraw occupied positions and territories. The leaders also condemned any attempt to fortify armed groups with a view to reviving hostilities in the occupied areas.

The summit was attended by the President of DRC and CAR, as well as representatives from ICGLR, SADC, EAC, ECCAS, African Union, United Nations and various others. institutions.

The progress made in the region has been welcomed, but much remains to be done to achieve lasting peace and security. The summit should be an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the various initiatives and peace efforts underway in the region.
