Investigation into the death of Chérubin Okende, opposition deputy in the DRC

The United Nations (UN) through its mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Monusco, has announced its participation in the investigation into the death of Chérubin Okende, opposition deputy. This statement was made by the UN envoy to the DRC, Bintou Keita, during a press conference in Kinshasa.

Chérubin Okende was found dead on July 13, in his car riddled with bullets, prompting accusations of political assassination from the opposition. Monusco has appointed General Mody Berethe, chief of its police, to coordinate its participation in the investigation.

It is important to emphasize that Monusco’s contribution is limited to technical support, particularly in the areas of technical and scientific police, digital analysis and interrogations. The Monusco team of experts will work in collaboration with the Congolese teams already in place, under the supervision of the Congolese justice system.

General Mody Berethe stressed that Monusco’s contribution will be made in accordance with Congolese law and the criminal procedure in force. He also affirmed that all the actions taken will be dictated by the instructions of the Congolese authorities.

Monusco’s participation in this investigation is a strong signal of the international community’s commitment to the fight against impunity and the promotion of human rights in the DRC. This will provide additional technical expertise to advance the investigations and ensure a transparent and credible investigation.

It is essential that this investigation be carried out in an independent and impartial manner and that it lead to the identification of those responsible for this criminal act. Justice must be delivered respecting the fundamental principles of the rule of law and guaranteeing the protection of victims’ rights.

Monusco’s participation in the investigation into the death of Chérubin Okende is a crucial step in the search for truth and justice. We hope that this collaboration between the Congolese authorities and the UN will make it possible to advance the investigations and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice
