The West of the Democratic Republic of Congo has recently been shaken by the activities of the “Mobondo” militiamen, as confirmed by the Deputy Minister of National Defense and former combatants Samy Adubango. The latter stressed that their influence is manifested in attacks against the defense and security forces. According to the minutes of the 100th meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Friday June 2, 2023, the Mobondo attackers are reported in the locality of Kimayala in the Chiefdom of Mfumfu territory of Madimba. The loyalist forces therefore face the continuation of these incursions by the “Mobondo” attackers.
The Deputy Minister of National Defense and Veterans reassured of the unfailing determination of the government and of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo to spare no effort in order to restore the authority of the State and the peace in parts of the country plagued by insecurity. But despite efforts, atrocities persist in this part of the DRC. Indeed, since the conflict between Teke and Yaka, many non-natives have been driven out of this region. Attacks by Mobondo militiamen then began to intensify, targeting boats on the Congo River in all directions. The villages of Nkana, Empunu, Ebali and Kunzulu are particularly affected. Nationals of these regions must also pay taxes collected by official services.
This situation suggests growing insecurity in this part of the country and many question marks remain unanswered, particularly on how the authorities will deal with this situation. In the meantime, the gradual return of the Teke to their villages following the activation of river activities, the traffic of boats and other craft, gives hope for an improvement in the situation. However, insecurity does not benefit anyone and it is important that measures are taken to restore peace in these regions in conflict
