Insecurity and violence continue to dominate the headlines in Kinshasa and the outlying regions. For the past few days, assailants belonging to the Yaka/Mobondo group have been investing these areas, multiplying violent incursions against the inhabitants who have denounced them. These attacks are mainly concentrated in the bush, in Mongata in the commune of Maluku, as well as in the rural commune of Batshongo, in the town of Kenge.
The government reacted by informing of the continuation of the incursions of the Mobondo assailants in several regions, in particular in the provinces of Kwango, Mai-Ndombe and Kongo Central where these militiamen were reported in the locality of Kimayala in the chiefdom of Nfufu. According to the Council of Ministers, the conflicts between Teke and Yaka are at the gates of Kinshasa. This inter-community violence began in June 2022 in the territory of Kwamouth, in the province of Mai-Ndombe, between the Teke and the Yaka. They quickly degenerated, causing a lot of damage, and caused the massive displacement of the population.
The government has taken measures to deal with the situation, in particular by activating river activities and boat traffic to allow the gradual return of the Teke to their villages. The authorities have also ensured the strengthening of security mechanisms to restore State authority and protect populations affected by insecurity.
In addition to inter-community violence, the government faces other security challenges, including the resurgence of urban banditry and crime, particularly in Kinshasa with the “kuluna” phenomenon, and in the provinces of Haut-Katanga, Nord-Kivu , South Kivu and Ituri, with armed robberies, kidnappings, roadblocks and attacks on mining sites. Despite these threats, the president remains committed to the development of the country.
Finally, the Vice-Minister of the Interior, Security and Customary Affairs also mentioned the damage caused by the torrential rain in Patambamba, in the province of Kasaï, where 80 households are left homeless. The Board took note of this situation.
In this climate of insecurity, the government is aware of the urgent need to act to protect populations and restore security in the affected regions.
