Denunciation of violence during the electoral process in the DRC
The Catholic Lay Apostolate Council of Congo (CALCC) recently issued a statement in which it strongly condemns the violence that took place during the ongoing electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to this civil society organization, the current political and social climate is particularly worrying.
In a recent interview with Radio Okapi, the president of the CALCC, Bosco Lalo, expressed his concern about the conduct of the electoral process. According to him, never before had such violence been observed in previous elections. Less than five months before the elections, he believes that respect for human rights and freedom of expression is being flouted. He particularly deplores the refusal of the authorities to allow clergymen to express themselves on the suffering of the population.
Bosco Lalo stresses that justice, law, truth and the happiness of the people must be the government’s priorities. He insists on the importance of securing the population and guaranteeing respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens.
This press release from the CALCC highlights the concerns of Congolese civil society about the violence surrounding the ongoing electoral process in the DRC. It calls for strict respect for human rights and real consideration of the needs and concerns of the Congolese people.
As the DRC prepares for the next elections, it is crucial that the authorities make every effort to ensure an electoral process that is transparent, peaceful and respectful of the rights of all citizens. Only an inclusive approach, based on respect and the will to meet the needs of the people, will make it possible to build a better future for all Congolese
