“DRC: growing insecurity in the province of Kinshasa”

The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is of growing concern to the government and the population. For several days, the province of Kinshasa has been the target of attacks by assailants identified as belonging to the Yaka/Mobondo group. The peripheral regions of the city-province are particularly affected, with violent incursions against the inhabitants.

The conflicts between Teke and Yaka, which began in June 2022 in the province of Mai-Ndombe, quickly escalated. Intercommunal violence has spread to other provinces, causing widespread damage and leading to massive displacement of the population.

The government has taken steps to remedy the situation. The loyalist forces face the attackers and managed to arrest 90 people, including 11 soldiers and 79 attackers. Security arrangements have been strengthened to deal with the resurgence of banditry and urban crime in various provinces.

The Deputy Minister of National Defense and Veterans Affairs reassured the population of the unfailing determination of the Government and the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo to restore State authority and security in the parties of the country plagued by insecurity.

The government also mentioned the damage caused by the torrential rain which fell on certain villages in the provinces, causing population displacements and extensive material damage.

Faced with the deterioration of the social situation in the DRC, the opposition has also sounded the alarm. More than 500 political parties are registered, but few have a real ideology or a clear program. Opposition leader Martin Fayulu demands a reliable and transparent electoral register for legislative and provincial elections.

Despite these challenges, the DRC is gearing up to host the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in 2024, a highly anticipated sporting event that could help reinvigorate the country.

Finally, to strengthen security and deal with massive population displacements, the government welcomed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who appealed for peace in an unstable region.

The DRC remains a country in search of stability, facing many economic, social and political challenges
