Assassination of Kakule Mbalikiriri Moïse Léonard in Butuhe, North Kivu

The security situation in the North Kivu region continues to deteriorate. On the night of Thursday to Friday, June 2, a new armed attack took place in Butuhe, a town located in the territory of Beni. Men carrying firearms assassinated Kakule Mbalikiriri Moïse Léonard, the honorary president of the local civil society, at his home. The bandits were equipped with balaclavas to conceal their identity.

According to local sources, the victim was hit by two bullets, one in the leg and another in the chest. The circumstances of the attack remain unclear, with some citing a land dispute as a possible cause. The impunity of armed groups in this region is a threat to the security of the population and the civil authorities.

The president of the civil society of Butuhe demanded that the authorities open an investigation to identify the perpetrators of this heinous crime. This new aggression is added to a long list of violence that strikes the region and generates a climate of permanent insecurity. The Congolese government must take strong measures to guarantee the security of its population and to fight against the impunity of the armed groups which sow terror in the region.

Many journalists and local associations are committed to talking about these unbearable events despite the difficulty of the situation and the risk they run. Follow our blog to stay informed of the news in the Democratic Republic of Congo
