Alarming insecurity in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo: threats from M23 and the Rwandan army.

North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to experience alarming insecurity. Several main axes of Rutshuru territory have indeed been destabilized by the M23 rebellion, supported by the Rwandan army. The ceasefire decreed in the regional agreements does not seem to have reached the armed groups.

According to the Deputy Minister of National Defence, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo are on alert against M23 terrorists, still supported by the Rwandan army. These armed groups seem to have expansionist tendencies, which continues to threaten the security of the population.

According to information reported by Sammy Adubango, the Rwandan soldiers would have reinforced themselves from Rwanda through the border post of Mwaru. The objective of this redeployment would be to attack the city of Goma, and thus provoke a new humanitarian crisis and insecurity.

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo are therefore on alert in the face of this worrying situation. However, despite the presence of the EAC regional force and strict compliance with the Luanda and Nairobi agreements, the armed groups continue to threaten the security of the population.

This insecurity also persists in the Rwenzori region, where six jihadists were killed in clashes with the army. Tension is high in this region, and the recent visit of the ICC prosecutor has only heightened tensions.

In this worrying context, the Governor of the Province of Lituri issued an ultimatum to the armed groups, after the visit of the ICC prosecutor. The authorities are therefore seeking to contain this insecurity, which endangers the population, while encouraging the voluntary repatriation of refugees.

It is crucial that the security situation in these regions be stabilized so that the population can live in safety, and that the upcoming elections take place in the best possible conditions.
