The displaced in Ituri: the operational bases of MONUSCO
In the province of Ituri, the humanitarian situation is worrying. More than 100,000 Congolese have been displaced and depend on the protection of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). These displaced people are scattered in different areas, particularly in the territories of Djugu and Mahagi.
MONUSCO plays an essential role in ensuring the physical protection of these displaced populations. The mission’s operating bases in Bayoo, Fataki, Rhoo and Gina are at the forefront of providing this protection and ensuring the safety of civilians.
The head of MONUSCO, Bintou Keita, underlined the importance of this mission during a press conference in Kinshasa. She also stressed that the return of peace and stability to the North Kivu region requires a lasting resolution to the conflict.
In this context, MONUSCO seeks to strengthen the coordination and joint planning of the troops present on the ground. It undertakes to work in collaboration with the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) and the other regional and bilateral forces deployed in the region. This approach aims to address security challenges and ensure the protection of civilians more effectively.
The province of South Kivu is also an area where the population depends on the protection of MONUSCO for its survival. The mission is therefore committed to meeting the needs of these vulnerable populations and to making the voices of Congolese women heard, who play a crucial role in the resolution of conflicts in the east of the country.
In summary, the situation of displaced people in Ituri is a major concern in the Democratic Republic of Congo. MONUSCO, through its operational bases, provides much-needed protection to more than 100,000 displaced people
