The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo is the subject of several exchanges during the 10th conference of the ICGLR in Luanda, Angola, which brings together several member countries of the region. This high-level conference, at the initiative of the Angolan Head of State, aims to take stock of the security situation in eastern DRC and the Republic of Sudan. On this occasion, the President of the Republic Félix Tshisekedi took part in this meeting.
During the opening ceremony, speeches by President Lourenço and Moussa Faki Mahamat, President of the African Union Commission, reaffirmed the importance of this meeting. President Lourenço said that today’s meeting should provide an opportunity to take stock of the Luanda and Nairobi processes. For his part, Moussa Faki Mahamat hailed the initiative of African countries in the region to work together to improve regional cooperation in security.
The meeting which brings together the Heads of State and their representatives continues behind closed doors, before producing a final communiqué. It is expected that this meeting will result in a joint declaration which will set out the measures to be taken to strengthen collaboration between the countries of the region.
On the sidelines of the conference, President Tshisekedi is expected to meet his counterparts in the region to discuss the security situation in the DRC, which remains worrying despite the efforts made. This conference seems to be a unique opportunity for members of the region to consult and work together to strengthen security in the eastern region of the DRC.
