The “Mobondo” militiamen are once again making a name for themselves in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in Maluku, in the commune of Kinshasa, where they are increasing their attacks against the defense and security forces, as confirmed by Deputy Minister of National Defense and Veterans Samy Adubango. According to the latter, these militiamen are also present in Kwango, Mai-Ndombe and recently in Kongo Central.
The conflict between the Teke and Yaka communities is said to be the cause of this growing insecurity, with attacks by “Mobondo” militiamen against boats on the Congo River. This conflict, which has already killed more than 300 people in less than a year according to Human Rights Watch, began in June 2022 following an increase in the customary fee by the village chief Masiambe, refused by non-natives. , including the Yaka.
However, progress has been noted, particularly with the gradual return of the Teke to their village following the activation of river activities and the recent arrest of several Mobondo assailants. Despite these advances, the Congolese authorities remain determined to restore State authority and peace in these insecure parts of the country.
This renewed tension comes on top of already busy news in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the elections are tense and where police repression is worrying, especially after the arrest of Salomon Kalonda. Faced with such challenges, the Congolese government must strive to put in place effective solutions to guarantee peace and security in the country.
