Uganda and the Games of La Francophonie: a promising cultural and economic rapprochement.

The Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa: an event that illuminates Uganda

Since July 29, Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been hosting the 9th Games of La Francophonie. This major sporting and cultural event highlights the country and attracts the attention of international media. Although Uganda is not a member of the Organization Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), it is interested in this event for various reasons.

Uganda, despite its status as an English-speaking country, has nearly 145,000 French-speaking people, or 0.4% of the population. This figure is constantly increasing thanks to a plan supported by local and international actors, such as the French Embassy, the Alliance Française and the Association of French Teachers in Uganda (APFO). In addition, the presence of a large community of French-speaking refugees from neighboring countries reinforces the importance of the French language in Ugandan society.

Education plays a key role in promoting French in Uganda. About 7000 learners of the French language are distributed in secondary schools, primary schools and universities in the country. The Alliance française de Kampala, with its more than 600 learners, also facilitates obtaining scholarships in France. This dynamic bears witness to the growing interest in the French language and culture.

Beyond education, French companies are investing in various sectors in Uganda, thus contributing to the economic development of the country. Trade with Francophone countries in the region also opens up new prospects for the development of Uganda’s economic relations with the East African Community and beyond.

Geopolitically, Uganda occupies a central position in East Africa, offering significant economic and political opportunities. The possibility of making the teaching of French and Kiswahili compulsory in primary and secondary schools could strengthen cultural and educational ties with neighboring French-speaking countries and promote sub-regional integration.

By capitalizing on its proximity to La Francophonie and strengthening its regional cooperation within East Africa, Uganda could play a key role in promoting regional cooperation and development. By placing the French language as an engine of integration, Uganda could shape a prosperous future for all of East Africa.

In conclusion, although Uganda is not a member of the OIF, it shows a growing interest in French language and culture. With its educational initiatives, economic partnerships and strategic geopolitical position, Uganda is well placed to strengthen its ties with La Francophonie and contribute to regional development.
